In
1918, Sir Evelyn Wrench founded the English Speaking Union. At the outset
of the First World War, he realised that a common language, in this instance
English, facilitated communication between peoples.Today
the ESU has grown into an independent, non political, non governmental
educational charity with members throughout the world. True to its creator's
vision, its purpose is still to promote international understanding and
better human achievement through the expanding use of the English language.
For millions of people, English is the key to personal achievement in the arts, business, politics and technology. The ESU's aim, therefore, is to make possible people-to-people exchanges, scholarships, public speaking competitions, conferences, national and international programmes through the generosity and interest of its members world wide. Today the ESU is represented in over 40 countries and with every passing year there is a growing demand to include more chapters. This international network will inevitably provide Lebanon with yet another much needed link to the global village.
